We have 2 Pekins. They don’t really fly, it’s more like, they use their wings to run really fast. They rarely even get their feet off the ground!

Some of them are simply too heavy to fly. Plus, many domestics ducks just don’t have the need to.

They have plenty of food offered by their humans, safe shelter, and warmth.

Should I Clip My Duck’s Wings?

If your ducks are heavy, they won’t be flying away anytime soon. Clipping their wings is probably not necessary.

However, if you have a lighter duck breed such as a muscovy, it’s a possibility that they might fly away.

Some ducks may fly away and never come back.

It’s really up to you where you want to clip their wings. I know people who do and people who don’t.

I also know many people who clip just one wing. They swear by it actually!

They say that they still have the ability to “fly” away from a predator, but not fly away.

How to Clip Wings

Clipping wings is kind of like clipping a dog’s nails. Wings have blood vessels in them, so you have to make sure not to cut a blood vessel.

  1. We have a baby ducks 2 months old now the mother has not been here for 2 weeks and it’s in our pool. There was a couple ducks that came and visited but now they have not been here and I’m afraid that Since it’s fledging now will will it know how to fly on its own and be able to escape the backyard and telephone telephone lines

    1. Hey sorry, I’ve been taking time off. At 2 months they should be big enough to be on their own. If these ducks are the type of ducks that can fly, they should be able to fly already. If you are feeding them they might stick around…
