What are affiliate links and sponsored posts?
Let’s start with why there is a need to disclose affiliate links and/or sponsored posts. Doctors don’t have to tell you that they are getting thousands, maybe millions of dollars from big pharma when the recommend “medicine”, but when I want to share a product (that I love, believe in, and/or believe that you will love it) with you that I might have gotten for free, or have been paid for I HAVE to disclose or face a possible fine, fees, and who knows what else. I don’t know what to say about this, I guess nobody said life would be fair?
An affiliate link is given a special ID number, which tells a system that this person or business (like me, Kristi at Homestead Wishing) sent you this customer (that’s you!) The person or business (me!) most likely will receive a small compensation ONLY if you buy something after clicking the affiliate link. Sometimes these links are active for days, weeks, and even months. Meaning if you click an affiliate link today, and you don’t buy anything, then go back to that website the next day, it MAY still give a compensation to the person or business. For many affiliate programs, the amount a person or business will make are pennies on the dollar. If you spend $10, a person or business may make 40 WHOLE cents! Not even enough for a cup of coffee these days. Although, there are other affiliate programs that pay better. One example of this is I love to share about these online gardening classes. Most of them are about $30 and some a little more. I make about a $15 commission every time someone buys using my affiliate link. I don’t share just because it will bring in more income to my hungry teenage boys, but I also LOVE those classes. I know that they have a world of wonderful information all coming from a gardener with 18 years of experience! So when you see affiliate links, don’t just see dollar signs, understand that a person or business is recommending a product to you. If I shared an affiliate link on Facebook book that would be one reason you might see (AD) (Sponsored), (affiliate links), or something of the sort on a post on Facebook, or twitter. In my blog posts you might see that I mention that there are affiliate links in that post. There are strict guideline saying that bloggers, and influencers are supposed to follow when it comes to affiliate links, whether on their own website, someone else’s or even on social media!
When a person or business writes a sponsored post it usually means that they are sharing their opinions or even recipes about a product. They may or may not receive free product and/or monetary compensation in exchange for this. Sometimes a person or business will also include links back to the product, store, or a retailer’s website, which makes those affiliate links or sponsored links. They may also include a coupon, or coupon code in their post. Many times included in the sponsored post package, a person or business will share their sponsored blog post on popular social media platforms. That’s one reason you might see (AD) (Sponsored), (affiliate links), or something of the sort on a post on Facebook, or twitter. Of course, you might also see a person or business disclosing because they are simply sharing an affiliate link. Like if I shared on Facebook, something that I thought you would like that I found on Amazon for example.
