Spices are so important these days when it comes to flavor foods. No one wants bland food. Having amazing spice blends that fit your needs, can help you be a better cook.

Another things about making your own spice blend is that you control the ingredients. If you want your spice blend to be spicy, you can make it spicy!

Why Mix Your Own Spice Mixes?

Store-bought spice mixes can have less than favorable ingredients in them. Companies who sell those mixes often put in preservatives to help the spices last longer, and stay fresh. However, many of them end up losing the strength of flavor after a while. They can become dull over time. Of course, this does depend on the different food items.

Such as herbs. Herbs tend to lose their flavor pretty quickly in my experience. For some reason store-bought herbs are just not as powerful in taste as home-grown herbs are. That’s one reason why I love herb gardening.

I preserve my own herbs and spices in order to have those beautiful and strong flavors. Unfortunately, I don’t have enough space in the garden to grow all of the spices and herbs I need to make my mixes. I may have to buy some at the store, however I grow what I can.

The flavors are better, stronger, and really liven up any recipe in my arsenal!

I love a good curry sauce! It's perfect on my mulligatawny recipe!


  • 2 tbsp cumin
  • 1 1/2- 2 tbsp coriander
  • 2 tbsp turmeric
  • 1 1/2 tsp cardamom


  1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well.
  2. Place in an airtight container for storage.
